Oh no no no no no, no one ever did teen heartbreak quite like the Shangri-Las. The Best of the Shangri-Las (1996), The Shangri-Las But it’s worth playing the whole thing to experience the full mystic, monolithic ritual of the thing. Jimmy Page’s juggernaut riffs and Robert Plant’s hedonistic wails set the bench mark for all subsequent heavy, hedonistic rock. Millennials coming at this album can end up feeling like the guy who saw Hamlet and complained it was all quotations. In 1989, her personal life was tabloid fodder: a tumultuous marriage to actor Sean Penn finally ended in divorce, and she was causing controversy with the “Like a Prayer” video and its burning crosses. It may be the most “serious” album she’s ever made, yet Like a Prayer is also Madonna at her most accessible – pulling no punches in topics from religion to the dissolution of her marriage. The mournful enigma of McCartney’s “For No One” and the psychedelia of Lennon’s “Tomorrow Never Knows” and “She Said, She Said” can still leave you standing hypnotised over the spinning vinyl, wondering if the music is coming out or being sucked back in. Released outside of Jamaica by Island Records with guitar overdubs and ornamentation, the original Jamaican version is a stripped-down masterpiece. He packed the album with beautiful melodic numbers, such as “High Tide and Low Tide”, and rhythmic dance tracks like “Kinky Reggae”. Marley sang of life “where the living is hardest” in “Concrete Jungle” and looked back to Jamaica’s ignoble slaving past – “No chains around my feet but I’m not free”. The album that carried reggae music to the four corners of the world and made Bob Marley an international superstar also set the political tone for many artists to follow. HBĬatch a Fire (Jamaican version) (1973), Bob Marley and the Wailers Propulsive polyrhythms drive against the lyrical pleas for us to stop and take stock. “Facts are simple and facts are straight / Facts are lazy and facts are late…” sang David Byrne, submerging personal and planetary anxieties about fake news and conspicuous consumption in dense, layers and loops of Afrobeat-indebted funk. Although that was really the only mediaeval imagery they conjured up – they ripped Dungeons & Dragons clichés out of the lyrics and replaced them with the apocalypse, with bassist Cliff Burton, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and singer/rhythm guitarist James Hetfield serving as the four horsemen. This album is about storytelling – the mediaeval-influenced guitar picks on opener “Battery” should be enough to tell you that. In 1986, they released one of the best metal records of all time, which dealt with the potency and very nature of control, meshing beauty and raw human ugliness together on tracks like “Damage Inc” and “Orion”. HBĭespite not featuring any singles, Metallica’s third album was the UK rock radio breakthrough they’d been looking for. You can hear her listening to the band, biding her time before firing up her voice to demand “R-E-S-P-E-C-T”, 50 years before the #MeToo movement. The Queen of Soul gave herself the same space. When Jerry Wexler signed the daughter of a violent, philandering preacher to Atlantic records, he “took her to church, sat her down at the piano, and let her be herself”. “Clouds don’t stay, and the sun always shines again,” says the upbeat Monica, before inserting her delirious 2010 cut “Love All Over Me.” Sorry Mo, heartbreak wins this round. The ’90s break-up anthem quickly has the comment section in shambles. The result proves to be golden, as she plays the inescapable 1994 jam “Brokenhearted” featuring Wanya Morris. Monica’s “Love All Over Me”Īfter realizing they reached an unfathomable 1.2 million views on their matchup, Brandy chooses to take a request from her opponent. Journeying back to Never Say Never, Brandy recounts the pressure of love before earning applause from Monica for “Almost Doesn’t Count.” Monica skillfully keeps the train of adoration running with “Why I Love You So Much,” before receiving a sea of “Ayes” for her sonorous vocals at the record’s tail-end. Round 8: Brandy’s “Almost Doesn’t Count” vs. “Movies and soundtracks just hit different back then.” “That song I was only 17, and that was for Space Jam,” says Monica. Monica also shows love to the Bryant family by speaking on how “For You I Will” remains an impactful song for Kobe’s wife Vanessa. Here, she pays homage to fallen figures in the Black community such as Kobe Bryant, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston before playing the loaded Set It Off soundtrack cut “Missing You,” recorded alongside Chaka Khan, Tamia and Gladys Knight. Monica’s “For You I Will”īrandy’s showmanship continues to shine during this matchup early on. Round 7: Brandy, Chaka Khan, Tamia & Gladys Knight’s “Missing You” Vs. Monica matches Brandy’s heartbreak with the melancholy “U Should’ve Known Better,” and even sings a cappella to make the tearful anthem that much stronger for R&B purists. Monica’s “U Should’ve Known Better”ĭating back to her 1998 sophomore attempt Never Say Never, Brandy reflects on sampling Joe for the criminally underrated track “Angel in Disguise,” before delving into her decision to stay single. Round 6: Brandy’s “Angel in Disguise” vs. “I’m done kicking in doors,” she playfully quips.īrandy & Monica 'Verzuz' Merch Has Arrived, With Proceeds Going to Michelle Obama's When We All… Mo issues an impressive comeback with her 2000s scorcher “So Gone,” which she reveals found her at a crossroads in her life romantically. ‘Full Moon’ is so serious,” gushes Monica after the song’s conclusion. Swaying back and forth, both Brandy and Monica dance in unison to the instant classic. Monica’s “So Gone”īrandy refuses to hit eject on her Full Moon album and opts to play its most savory single with its title-track single. Monica effusively praises Brandy for her “unmatched” tone, before getting back in the game her dulcet track “A Dozen Roses.” With Missy in tow, Monica proves why she and the hip-hop luminary were such a superb tandem in the 2000s. She ruminates about how her 2002 effort didn’t pack as many singles as she might’ve liked, but unearths a sparkling cut here. Monica’s “A Dozen Roses”ĭubbed a “fan favorite,” Brandy slows down the tempo after her fiery entrance with her spellbinding deep cut from Full Moon. Monica’s “Everything to Me”īrandy kicks off the R&B jam fest with her Darkchild-produced 2002 Full Moon banger “What About Us?” In return, Monica serves up an equally unshakable record in her 2010 ballad “Everything to Me.” Monica’s resounding vocals shake the room but aren’t enough to clinch the opening round. See Billboard’s official scorecard for the record-setting event below. "Octane", "Prison Break", "Tremor", "Freight", "Stormfront", "Siege", "Warhawk", "Sovereign", "Overlord", "Flooded", "Strikezone", "Whiteout", "Stonehaven" and "Chasm" are the maps that are in Call of Duty: Ghosts so far. The player's squad can be leveled up and will act like a true individual. This features a squad that the player can build and the player can face other squads around the world. On October 3, a new multiplayer type was revealed, called Squads. The sniper rifle scopes also have new "dual render technology" allowing the player to see around the outside of the scope (although blurred) when zoomed in. The player can get the ODIN kill streak by either getting a certain amount of kills or by killing the top player on the other team and then completing various challenges after picking up a blue briefcase that is dropped. There is a nuke-like kill streak reward, the KEM Strike. Maps now have areas that can be altered or destroyed. The multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Ghosts features changes from previous Call of Duty games as some new mechanics have been added to it. Players assume the role of Logan for most of the game, with several other playable characters, including an astronaut specialist named Baker, Sergeant Thompson, member of Icarus and Logan's father, Elias Walker, with an all new option to play as Riley, the first non-human playable character in the franchise. In Call of Duty: Ghosts, the story is mostly told through the eyes of a single character, Logan Walker. A playable German Shepherd named Riley, who is part of the player's squad Campaign
My son saw it, and he thought it was a good production. Hi, Sheila! I missed this film in the cinema, but I'll watch it once the DVD is out. :)Ĭharito Maranan-Montecillo from Manila, Philippines on October 16, 2015: Anyways, thank you for checking out my review. And I think I'm becoming too passionate I already signed a petition for this movie to be shown in schools hehe. This movie made me feel proud of being Filipino. Hello, Ate Charito! Yes, you should see it. Sheila Navio-Pornan (author) from Manila, Philippines on October 16, 2015:
Iron Man, Thor and Hulk all dodge (or brush off) bullets via their self-evident fantastical/sci-fi trimmings. The First Avenger, with its steampunk-laser weirdness and numbing, never-ending montages, felt dull and insulated. The action and violence are the most grounded we've seen in a Marvel film. But, as Rogers' journey manhandles him out into the cold and makes him a hoodie-wearing renegade advised to "trust nobody" and targeted by a similarly empowered super-agent (the titular Winter Soldier), the influence of the Bourne trilogy weighs down, too - the Russos even going so far as to steal a famous Bourne shot directly towards the film's end. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) is in there too, for sure. suit Alexander Pierce suggests 1975's Three Days Of The Condor as its most obvious inspiration. It is certainly the studio's most talky and plotty, and the big wink that is the casting of Robert Redford (who, by the way, would have been ideal Cap casting in the '70s) as S.H.I.E.L.D. It's uncertain how much any of it will land with the film's young, core audience, although this does feel like Marvel's most 'mature' picture yet, an admirable risk to take. Pretty bold stuff to be sneaking under the canvas of this primary-coloured marquee. There are then indirect tributes to Edward Snowden's whistleblowing and shades of the NSA privacy-invasion scandal. For Rogers the moral decline appears instantaneous, and it rankles intensely. History has seen the nation gradually diminished from world's saviour, to world's policeman, to a "caretaker" over the course of decades. This is not what America should be doing. goons take out a crew of French/Algerian pirates, our blond hero complains of being forced to play "Fury's caretaker". During a great opening set-piece in which Rogers, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and a squad of S.H.I.E.L.D. Post-Chitauri invasion, Rogers is a useful asset for shady superspy network S.H.I.E.L.D., but also a pain in the ass. Something co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo (Welcome To Collinwood) clearly relish getting their indie-cred teeth into on a blockbuster scale. As a 95 year-old thirtysomething with an early-'40s value set in War-On-Terror America, he is less the USA's poster boy than its most steadfast foil. During the very same dialogue he says, "I thought the punishment usually came after the crime," and - just in case we hadn't got the point - "This isn't freedom, this is fear." Even so, what we have here is the key to Captain America's real appeal, the answer to any criticism that he's just a stiff-necked, steroidal boy scout. "You're holding a gun to everyone on Earth and calling it protection," Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) tells Nick Fury (Samuel L. Not that writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus are being subtle about it. After that, well, you just need to find The Incredible Hulk and the Spider-Man movies elsewhere, before watching Eternals in the cinema and you’re all sorted. Phew, we’re exhausted just thinking about watching all the Marvel movies in chronological order! Then you’ll get to rewatch the very first MCU movie, Iron Man and follow his journey to becoming part of The Avengers, before Thanos ultimately wipes out half of the universe. We’ve outlined every Marvel movie in chronological order so you can watch them all from start to finish without worrying you’ve missed anything. They are fun, but they are also important because the design of the spaces we spend time in have profound effects on how we feel, think and move. The video games in this list create space to notice, reflect and try your hand at architecture. Northgard is a strategy game based on Norse mythology in which you control a Clan of Vikings fighting for the control of a mysterious newfound continent. Whether it's the atmospheric lighting of Control, the climbable buildings of the Uncharted series or Shadow of the Colossus vast cathedral-like structures, video games often create original spaces that stop you in your tracks. From the Escher-like Manifold Garden to the scale-confounding Superliminal, these games can play with perspective and movement to not only confuse the player but open new possibilities in perceiving buildings.įinally, there are games with breathtaking architecture. Then there are games that build spaces that would be impossible in real life. Then there are games like Animal Crossing, that offer a social context in which to apply your architectural and landscaping skills. Games like Townscaper allow you to easily create series of buildings and consider how one structure relates to those around it - like a street-scene generator. Then there are games like The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Biomutant, Enslaved or The Last Of Us that drop you in a once-great but now ruined architecture.Īlong with these pre-built spaces, there are also games that invite you to affect and rebuilt the architecture of a world. Others, like The Witcher, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and Eastshade, create their own cities and buildings. Some, like Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto and Forza Horizon recreate virtual versions of familiar places. Video games mirror and magnify this built environment in different ways. Our homes, offices, shopping malls, cathedrals, stations, bridges and even public toilets have all been designed. We spend our lives in buildings every day. |
